Mothica has released her new EP Somewhere In Between, marking her first project with SharpTone Records and a clear shift in sound. Across five tracks, the LA artist leans further into heavier guitars, industrial textures and darker songwriting while keeping the emotional honesty that has defined her work from the start.
The EP arrives alongside new single “Weapon”, one of the project’s most personal moments. Written just before entering rehab, the track reflects on self awareness, addiction and the complicated ways control can show up in someone’s life. Finishing the song after leaving rehab gave it a different weight, turning it into something that feels reflective rather than just raw.
For McKenzie Ellis, Somewhere In Between represents a reset. Getting sober again opened the door to writing more directly about feelings she had been numbing, shaping a sound that sits between dark pop, rock and metal without fully committing to one lane. The result is a project that feels heavier sonically but also more intentional emotionally.
The EP continues a trajectory that has seen Mothica build a global audience through deeply personal storytelling, from early songs about survival and trauma to recent material exploring relapse, recovery and identity. That honesty has helped her connect with listeners across genres while collaborating with a new wave of alternative producers and artists.

There’s also a sense of momentum around this era. Following recent singles “Save Your Roses” and “Evergreen Misery”, the new EP expands that world rather than closing it. The project feels less like a dramatic reinvention and more like a natural evolution of everything she’s been building.
With Somewhere In Between, Mothica isn’t chasing a specific scene. She’s carving out space that allows vulnerability and heaviness to exist at the same time.
