UNWELL Are One to Watch — Big Things Are Brewing in Detroit

Detroit’s UNWELL are a band you need on your radar. Recently signed to Pure Noise Records — the same powerhouse behind genre staples like The Story So Far, State Champs, and Knocked Loose — the rising four-piece are carving their own lane with a sound that bridges muscular alt-rock, heartfelt pop-punk, and bursts of hardcore intensity. Their upcoming debut album, Allegoria, out November 7th via Pure Noise, is already shaping up to be one of the label’s most ambitious releases this year.

Their latest single, “Craven,” dropped alongside a cinematic new video and perfectly encapsulates the group’s mix of vulnerability and power. Vocalist Matt Copley describes it as “a cathartic release,” adding, “It’s about the kind of person who hides behind anger, ego, and loud words, hoping no one notices their fear. This song gave me the space to finally say: I see through it. And I’m done.”

That blend of emotional honesty and theatrical edge is exactly what makes UNWELL stand out. Allegoria takes listeners through what the band call “a world of symbols” — an immersive concept record where each track acts as its own story or parable. “We wanted this album to feel like stepping into a medieval tapestry woven with modern wounds: love, loss, power, addiction, and the search for redemption,” Copley explains. “Every track is its own relic, dressed in vintage tones and ancient language, but carrying emotions that are still bleeding today.”

The record’s world-building doesn’t stop at its sound. Allegoria’s artwork and visuals embrace a striking “medieval futurism” — think Gothic castles, cosmic skies, and crumbling thrones — all symbolising the band’s ability to take real pain and elevate it to mythic proportions.

It’s this attention to detail that’s earned UNWELL a growing cult following and a reputation for intense, heartfelt live shows. Having already shared stages with The Used, The Amity Affliction, and Bearings, they’re quickly proving they can hold their own alongside some of the genre’s biggest names. And with talk of UK shows in 2026, fans on this side of the Atlantic won’t have long to wait to experience it first-hand.

UNWELL’s music speaks to both the barricade and the back row — theatrical yet raw, escapist yet grounded. In a scene that’s constantly evolving, Pure Noise clearly sees something special in them, and from the sound of Allegoria, it’s easy to understand why.

Detroit might be known for its grit, but UNWELL are giving it grandeur.
