Like Roses Put Their Heart into Cher’s ‘Believe’ for Hopeless Records’ ‘Songs That Saved My Life’

It’s been three long years since Hopeless Records last touched the Songs That Saved My Life series — and if there was ever a band to bring it back, it’s Like Roses. The Berkeley-born emo rock trio have teamed up with the label to breathe new life into the beloved charity project, putting their own raw, heartfelt spin on Cher’s iconic anthem “Believe.”

Like Roses – ‘Believe’

For anyone who grew up belting that track in their room — or sobbing into a hairbrush post-breakup — this one’s going to hit differently. Like Roses’ version keeps the empowering spirit of the original but layers it with that perfect blend of grit and vulnerability that’s quickly made them one of the most exciting new names in the alt-scene.

Frontwoman Amy Schmalkuche shared how much this song meant to her during a time of heartbreak. “I was dealing with the aftermath of ending a long-term relationship,” she said. “That summer, I heard ‘Believe’ again for the first time in what felt like forever… I remember being like, ‘wait, this is actually kind of a badass pop banger of a breakup song.’” She went on to describe blasting the track down the freeway, yelling every word — finding power instead of pain. “There was something healing about finding reassurance in an absolute club banger.”

That’s the exact energy that Songs That Saved My Life was built on — a project dedicated to celebrating the tracks that got people through their darkest moments. With proceeds going to organizations like The Trevor Project, To Write Love On Her Arms, Crisis Text Line, and Superbands, the series has always been about connection, healing, and the universal bond of music.

For Like Roses, this release also marks a new chapter. After officially signing with Hopeless Records last month, they’re wasting no time making waves. The band — Amy alongside guitarist Devin Zamora and bassist Kayla Gonzalez — have already racked up millions of streams and shared stages with Neck Deep, The Wonder Years, and Mayday Parade. This fall, they’ll be supporting Pierce The Veil on tour, hitting some of their biggest venues yet.

Their take on “Believe” isn’t just a cover — it’s a reminder that even in heartbreak, there’s power in dancing it out, screaming it loud, and moving forward. Like Roses have managed to turn one of pop’s most recognizable hits into something deeply personal, and in doing so, they’ve reignited a project that’s helped countless fans find strength through sound.

If you’ve ever needed a reason to turn the volume up and remind yourself you don’t need anyone anymore — this is it.
