The Devil Wears Prada’s Vinyl Secret Is Finally Out

If you’ve been going to shows long enough, you know the shout. It comes from somewhere near the pit, usually between songs, usually loud enough that everyone hears it… “Play the old shit.”

Even after nearly twenty years, The Devil Wears Prada still hear it. And instead of rolling their eyes or ignoring it, they leaned straight into it.

“Play The Old Shit” was never meant to be a big rollout or a headline grabbing single. It originally lived quietly at the very end of the vinyl version of Flowers, tucked away like a little inside joke for the fans who still drop the needle and listen all the way through. A reward for sticking around. A wink to the people who’ve been there since With Roots, Zombie, and everything in between.

Now, thanks to demand from fans, that secret is out in the open. The track has finally landed on streaming, and it feels less like a new release and more like a moment of self awareness from a band that knows exactly who they are and where they’ve come from.

What makes it land is how straightforward it is. No overthinking, no forced nostalgia, just a different mood to close the album. Mike Hranica has said the song gives Flowers a completely different ending, and that’s exactly how it feels. Like the band loosening their shoulders after an intense record, having a laugh, and letting long time listeners in on it.

There’s something refreshing about that, especially now. This song wasn’t designed for playlists or short attention spans. It existed on vinyl first. It lived offline. It waited. And because of that, it actually means something when it finally shows up everywhere else.

It also says a lot about where The Devil Wears Prada are at in 2026. Two decades deep, still experimenting, still connected to the scene that raised them, and still comfortable enough to poke fun at the relationship they’ve built with their fans. That’s not an easy balance to strike, and most bands never get there.

“Play The Old Shit” isn’t about going backwards. It’s about acknowledging the journey, respecting the past, and proving you can move forward without pretending those early years never happened.

The timing feels right, too. With The Devil Wears Prada set to return to the UK later this year, that balance between past and present is about to hit live. Whether you found the song hidden at the end of the vinyl or you’re hearing it for the first time now, it’s another reminder that this band still know exactly how to speak to their crowd, without shouting about it!
