‘Does This Look Infected?’ Turns 23: Why Does It Still Sound Like Pure Adrenaline?

Some albums get older. Does This Look Infected? just gets louder. Released on November 26th 2002, Sum 41’s second record turns 23 this year, and it still hits with the kind of energy that feels like you’re back in your mate’s bedroom, blasting it through terrible speakers before heading out to a gig.

Sum 41 – Still Waiting

This was the album where Sum 41 shifted from being the pop punk lads behind “Fat Lip” into something heavier, darker, and a lot more intense. The riffs snapped harder, the lyrics dug deeper, and the band suddenly sounded like they were sprinting through every song with something to prove. You can almost hear them levelling up in real time.

Even with the heavier direction, the humour and personality never disappeared. The zombie artwork, the attitude, the iconic videos, the unfiltered chaos of it all. Does This Look Infected? managed to be loud, messy in the best way, and completely unforgettable. It felt like a band experimenting without losing their charm.

Sum 41 – The Hell Song

The tracklist still goes off today. “Still Waiting”, “The Hell Song”, “Over My Head (Better Off Dead)” and the rest of the record helped define the early 2000s alternative scene. These songs were soundtracks for the moments that actually stuck with you. Getting ready for nights out. Hanging around car parks. Running into pits. Heartbreaks. House parties. Skate sessions. They were everywhere, and somehow they still hit just as hard now.

Part of the reason this album aged so well is because it never chased anything. It didn’t try to fit into a sound or follow a trend. It was loud, sharp, honest and full of that wild early 2000s energy that bands weren’t scared to push. It blended punk, metal and melody in a way that was way ahead of its time.

And now that Sum 41 have officially wrapped up their career, listening back to this record feels even more special. It reminds you of the exact moment they stepped into a new era and proved they could go heavier without losing the hooks and personality that made everyone fall for them in the first place. They created something that stuck around long after the hype faded.

Twenty three years later, it still sparks that same rush. It still makes you want to jump around your room and scream lyrics you’ll never forget. Does This Look Infected? didn’t just survive. It became a permanent part of alternative music history, and it still sounds as alive as it did the week it came out.
