Jeremy McKinnon: “Disrespect Your Surroundings” Wasn’t Meant for Us

Imagine a world where “Disrespect your surroundings!” wasn’t screamed by a sea of A Day To Remember fans—but instead by The Devil Wears Prada. Sounds fake, right? But according to Jeremy McKinnon, that almost happened.

On the Nik Nocturnal Podcast, the ADTR frontman shared a wild behind-the-scenes story: the iconic line from “Mr. Highway’s Thinking About the End” was originally meant for a different band.

“We had that line written, and we were like, ‘Oh, that’d be sick for Prada,’” Jeremy said, laughing.

Thankfully, the idea never left the ADTR universe—and the result was one of the most legendary breakdown callouts in scene history.

But that wasn’t the only gem Jeremy dropped during the episode.

New Albums, Old Formats, and CD Players?!

Jeremy also talked about how A Day To Remember are navigating their next album rollout—teasing Big Ole Album Vol. 2 and the energy behind it. There’s a nostalgic twist to the new release too, with the band embracing physical formats like vinyl and CDs.

“Some fans had to go out and buy a CD player just to listen,” Jeremy said, amused.

It all ties into the larger comeback of record stores and the tactile joy of holding an album—something ADTR clearly still believes in.

20 Years In—and Still Going Full Tilt

With two decades under their belt, Jeremy reflected on how far the band has come—from growing up in Florida and dodging alligators (yes, really) to building their own insane personal studio.

“It’s wild. We used to just mess around in our bedrooms… now we’re working in a studio we built ourselves.”

And while they’ve grown professionally, Jeremy’s still got a soft spot for where it all started. He gave a shoutout to Parks Avenue, a local shop that supported ADTR in the early days, and emphasized the importance of indie music communities.

From Florida Man to Festival King

The chat also covered the band’s recent run at Knotfest Australia and the chaos of long-haul flights, but things got extra fun when Nik asked about the infamous “Florida Man” stereotype.

“I am Florida Man,” Jeremy joked, before admitting that yeah—gators in backyards are a real thing.

Scams, Album Titles, and Nik’s Big Cameo

In one unexpected moment, Jeremy revealed he was nearly scammed out of getting the master files for the new album. The band almost didn’t get it back—but thankfully, things got sorted before it became a disaster.

And as for the name Big Ole Album Vol. 2? That wasn’t just a placeholder. Jeremy explained the story behind it and even joked about Nik’s face possibly showing up on the new album cover—because why not?

The Band That Keeps Bending the Rules

Whether they’re redefining genre boundaries or narrowly dodging studio disasters, A Day To Remember continue to do things on their own terms. And somehow, the chaos works.

From misfit breakdowns to almost handing Prada one of their most iconic lines, Jeremy McKinnon reminded us why ADTR has never fit into a box—and never plans to.
