As It Is Return With New Single “Marilyn” Ahead Of Self Titled Album

As It Is have released a brand new single called “Marilyn”, the latest preview of their upcoming self titled album which arrives July 17 through Fearless Records.

Marilyn

The track leans into a nostalgic alt rock sound, built around driving acoustic guitars, big hooks and bittersweet melodies. It is a reflective song at its core, centred around the lasting impact that small moments of kindness can have on someone’s life. The accompanying video was filmed around Brighton, a place the band have long considered their spiritual home, and acts as a love letter to the city and the people who shaped them along the way.

Frontman Patty Walters explained the meaning behind the song, saying:

“It’s never felt easier to be a pessimist and nihilist, so writing a song about hope and humanity felt right. It’s about a near stranger and their goodness making a big difference early on in your life, but how hindsight can make that difference even clearer. But it’s also about how people are never really gone not while their words, actions and values live on in the people their lives have touched.”

“Marilyn” follows the band’s earlier return track “Lose Your Way & Find Yourself” and continues to build anticipation for the upcoming record, which marks the first full body of work created by the quartet in eight years.

The self titled album represents a new chapter for As It Is. After years of touring, lineup changes and personal struggles, the band reconnected as friends first before even thinking about making music again. That process led them back into the studio with producer Kel Pinchin, where they focused on writing songs that felt honest to who they are now rather than chasing trends or expectations.

The result is a record that pulls influence from the bands that inspired them in the first place, with flashes of early 2000s emo and alt rock sitting alongside the emotional honesty that has always been at the centre of their music.

With the album set for release in July, As It Is will also be hitting the road with a run of UK shows including a London date at the O2 Academy Brixton and festival appearances at Download and Burn It Down.

For now, “Marilyn” offers another glimpse into a band reconnecting with the reason they started making music in the first place.
