DARKO Salute DIY Heroes on Thunderous New Single “Canvas”

South England’s progressive punk firestarters DARKO have unleashed “Canvas,” the blistering title track from their upcoming EP, due July 18 via Thousand Islands Records and Lockjaw. More than just a sonic gut-punch, “Canvas” is a rallying anthem for the underdogs of the scene — the grassroots promoters who pour heart, soul, and savings into keeping live music alive.

This release marks the final chapter in DARKO’s conceptually linked trilogy, following Sparkle and Greyscale, and it’s easily their most anthemic and ambitious offering yet. “Canvas” hits like a freight train — fusing groove-laden riffage, death metal growls, and post-rock atmosphere into a defiant tribute to the DIY community. It’s progressive punk with a purpose, and it doesn’t hold back.

Since forming in the south of England, DARKO have built a reputation as one of the most technically fierce and emotionally fearless bands in melodic hardcore. They’ve toured across 40+ countries — from Australia to Japan — and shared stages with Propagandhi, Frank Turner, Ignite, Strung Out, and H2O. Along the way, they’ve transformed sweaty bar gigs into full-scale meltdowns and festival appearances into legend.

Everything shifted when former frontman Dan Smith remained in Australia post-pandemic. Rather than pause, DARKO doubled down, enlisting Almeida’s Tom West to take the mic. With him came a heavier, more metal-influenced sound and a new level of lyrical intensity. Their first release with West, “The Ladder,” tackled misogyny in punk head-on — polarizing longtime fans, but drawing in a passionate new following.

Now with Canvas, they’re closing the trilogy on their own terms. It’s a record that refuses to play it safe, twisting skate-punk technicality with metal muscle and bold, purpose-driven themes. “Canvas” especially highlights the financial strain and quiet heroism of DIY promoters — often overlooked, but undeniably vital to the communities that punk thrives in.

Critics and fans alike have been shouting DARKO’s name louder with each release. From Big Cheese praising their “skills and imagination” to Rock Sound dubbing them “techy skate-punk for fans of Belvedere and Strung Out,” and The Hard Times simply stating, “Seriously, if you have not heard Darko, then you need to check them out.”

If “Canvas” is anything to go by, DARKO aren’t just finishing a trilogy — they’re cementing their place as one of the UK’s most vital and visionary punk acts.

The EP will be available on all major digital platforms, as well as on CD, vinyl, and as part of a box set that includes Sparkle and Greyscale. You can pre-save or pre-order it now here.
